First — no, you're not getting a new number
I get why this question comes up. Every answering service story you've heard probably involves some kind of number swap or new hardware showing up at the shop. Not this. Your number stays your number — the one on your trucks, your Google listing, your business cards, everything. Nothing about how a customer reaches you changes.
So how does the AI actually get the call?
Conditional Call Forwarding. Unlike regular call forwarding, which redirects everything all the time, this only kicks in under specific conditions you set:
- Nobody answers — it rings out
- You're already on the line — busy signal
- Your phone's off or unreachable
That means your team still picks up every call they're able to. The AI only steps in for the calls that would've gone to voicemail — or worse, just rang and rang until the customer hung up and called the next guy.
Setting it up isn't a project
Most carriers and business lines let you turn this on with a short code:
- Dial the activation code your carrier uses (it's usually something starting with *61, *67, or *004)
- Set how many rings before it kicks over
- Punch in the forwarding number (your No Lost AI line)
- You'll hear a confirmation tone — that's it, you're done
If you're on a VoIP setup like RingCentral or Google Voice, it's even easier — no dial code, just a toggle in your settings under "Call Forwarding" or "Ring Rules."
What stays exactly the same
Your Google Business Profile. Your website. The number on the side of your van. All of it stays put. The only thing that's different is what happens on the call your guy couldn't get to because he was elbow-deep in a furnace.
